Happy Birthday, Warren Ellis

February 16, 2009

Well, look who’s turned 41 (or 104, according to himself). Warren Ellis, the writer of comics like Transmetropolitan, Orbiter and other masterpieces. May he have many years of good writing and hating the Welsh.

The Dark Poet Speaks Again

February 1, 2009

Approaching 15 years of Bill Hicks’ death, David Letterman, on this past Friday (01-30-2009), invited his mother, Mary Hicks, for an interview and to apologise for never airing one of Bill’s routines in 1993 – something that hurt Bill so much he handwrote a 39-page letter to John Lahr of The New Yorker. He wasn’t given a reason, but he could figure it out — his routine criticized the pro-lifers, and during the late show’s intervals, there were pro-life commercials. He would die of pancreatic cancer about five months later.

This is the bit of the show concerning Letterman’s explanation, Mary Hicks’ interview and the routine. Even though it took so long, I appreciate Letterman taking full responsability. It’s no half-assed apology he makes.

Enjoy.
